Lance building Roanoke warehouse
Lance Inc., a Charlotte, N.C.-based snack-food manufacturer, is building a warehouse on Rhodes Avenue in Roanoke. The 5,000-square-foot building will cost $117,000. Lionberger Construction is the contractor.
Branch Manager Ray Baughman said Lance's rented distribution center handles inventory for 10 delivery routes in the Roanoke Valley.
Lance, with operations in 36 states, has $500 million in sales nationally, $2.3 million in the Roanoke Valley. - Staff report

\ The Jack Smith Agency, a major Roanoke advertising firm, is closing. Smith said Friday he will join the staff of an international company outside the field of advertising. He declined to identify the company, but Smith said he will be based in Roanoke. The agency, with an office in the 2800 block of Brandon Avenue, was founded about seven years ago. It has won many awards in the local Addy and other contests.
\ A partnership headed by billionaire businessman John W. Kluge has signed a letter of intent to acquire majority ownership of Jimbo's Jumbos, a peanut processor with headquarters in Edenton, N.C. The deal is worth more than $33 million.

\ Heilig-Meyers Co., a Richmond-based home furnishings retailer with stores in the Roanoke Valley, said revenues for its fiscal year ended Feb. 28 rose 26.5 percent to $657.5 million from $519.9 million last year, while earnings rose 40.7 percent to $38 million from $27 million. Earnings per share rose 31.6 percent to $1.25 from 95 cents last year.
