SMYTH HOSPITAL GETS NEW WAY TO TREAT KIDNEY

Smyth County Community Hospital now has access to a mobile system using shock waves to crush kidney stones and allow patients to complete treatment in less than a day.

It sends shock waves through a water-filled self-contained generator, rather than requiring a patient to be immersed in water. Heavy anesthetics no longer are required with the device.

"We'll be performing the service once a month," said Dr. Edward Moskowitz, a urologist. The hospital has contracted with Carilion Health Systems of Roanoke for use of the mobile unit.

The hospital also has named Joanne Groseclose, a Marion Intermediate School teacher and former Virginia Teacher of the Year, to its board of directors. - Southwest bureau
