MOST card network in merger talks

RESTON - Internet Inc., the Reston company that owns and operates the MOST network of automated teller machines, is discussing a merger with the owner of Honor, a larger network in the Southeast, the two companies said.

A merger would allow holders of MOST ATM cards to plug into a network as far south as Florida. But many MOST card holders would not notice the difference. Their banks already have relationships with the Plus or Cirrus networks, which can accept Most cards all over the nation and internationally. - Associated Press

Coal-benefits rescue to aid some operators

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - A 1992 law to rescue the failing trust funds that pay health benefits to 200,000 retired coal miners will yield "a multimillion-dollar windfall" to some companies, an economic analysis says.

The study released Friday was funded by other companies trying to overturn the act. It estimates members of the Bituminous Coal Operators Association will save between $111 million and $158 million a year in retiree health costs now being distributed among nonassociation companies.

Association spokesman Morris Feibusch did not dispute the savings. - Associated Press
