CIGARETTE SPARKS FIRE IN ROANOKE

A burning cigarette ignited a couch which burned the inside of a Northeast Roanoke apartment Saturday morning, authorities said.

District Fire Chief Garry Basham said about 11 firefighters were called to the Thrasher Manor Apartment on Old Vinton Mill Road about 8:15 a.m.

At first firefighters detected little smoke, but when they opened the apartment, heavy smoke came rolling out.

Basham estimated about $15,000 worth of a damage to the apartment and its contents.

No one was injured in the blaze.
