REPUBLICANS DON'T NEED ABORTION ADVICE

THE ROANOKE Times & World-News is now advising Republicans about the abortion issue. Republicans are surely grateful to receive advice once more from this close friend. After all, this newspaper almost always supports Republican candidates for public office.

The newspaper says the "absolutist anti-abortion language" of the Republican Party's platform hurt them in the 1992 presidential election. That's not quite right. A poll conducted by Richard Wirthlin found that, of the 16 percent of the voters who were influenced by the abortion issue, Bush received twice as many votes as Clinton.

Perhaps the newspaper should advise the Democrats that they need to drop the absolutist pro-abortion language in their platform. Oops, I forgot. You would definitely not want to help Democrats who are much too liberal for the Roanoke Times & World-News. HERB DILLON NARROWS
