At Buchanan, James River scored 17 runs in the first two innings and flogged Bath County 26-5 in the Pioneer District season-opening game for both teams. Freshman Angie Sink was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI; Camille Arbogast was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. James River had 13 hits, but Bath walked 15 batters and committed six errors.
\ BASEBALL: At Floyd, the Buffaloes used 13 walks and nine hits to batter Shawsville 13-3. Floyd scored six runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth to end the game by the 10-run rule. Mike Hylton had two hits and was the winning pitcher, striking out five. Josh Howery added two hits and three RBI for the Buffaloes (1-1).
Jason Boothe hit a two-run home run for Shawsville (1-1) in the top of the fifth to pull the Shawnees to 3-2.
At Riner, Jeremy West struck out five in three innings as Auburn beat Craig County 5-1 in a game shortened to four innings because of darkness. Auburn (2-0) had five hits, all doubles. Craig County is 0-2.
At William Byrd, Kevin Saunders and Gary Wiggins each slammed a three-run home run as the Terriers routed Radford 14-3.
At Lynchburg, a seven-run first inning propelled Lynchburg Christian Academy (2-0, 2-0) to a 14-4 rout of Roanoke Valley Christian (1-1, 1-1) in the Virginia Independent Conference.
At Stuart, senior left-hander Jeb Kreager threw a no-hitter as Patrick County opened its season with a 5-1 victory over Laurel Park. Kreager got 17 of his 21 outs by strikeout. He walked five and hit one batter. The Lancers are 0-2.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Charlottesville, Ryan Cook had four goals and an assist as North Cross wiped out Miller School 6-0 in a Virginia Independent Conference game. Goalie Eric Mull earned the shutout with four saves. North Cross is 2-0, 1-0; Miller School is 1-1, 0-1.
