ASHE HEALTH CENTER TO SERVE AIDS PATIENTS

A health center named in honor of the late tennis star Arthur Ashe will open in Richmond in September to serve people with the AIDS virus, Gov. Douglas Wilder said Monday.

Wilder said he will ask the General Assembly to approve a $150,000 budget amendment to fund the Arthur Ashe Health Center. The proposal will be among the budget amendments that the assembly will consider April 7.

The center will be part of a primary care clinic being developed by the Richmond Health Department and the Medical College of Virginia.

The center will provide early intervention, counseling and treatment for people infected with the HIV virus that causes AIDS.

Ashe, a Richmond native, died of AIDS-related complications in February. - Associated Press
