INTERIM PROSECUTOR NAMED FOR EASTERN VA.

Kenneth E. Melson, first assistant to U.S. Attorney Richard Cullen, has been named interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Cullen said Monday.

Cullen's resignation took effect Monday. Cullen said he planned to return to private practice with the Richmond firm of McGuire, Woods, Battle & Boothe.

Cullen said Melson is a career prosecutor in the Alexandria office of the U.S. attorney who served as his chief administrative officer. Melson was interim U.S. attorney in the gap between Cullen's term and that of his predecessor, Henry E. Hudson.

President Clinton asked for the resignation of all U.S. attorneys, who are appointed to serve at the president's pleasure. - Associated Press
