STATE, LOCALITIES TO GET BLIZZARD RELIEF

Some emergency federal funding will be granted to Virginia and its local governments to ease the cost of snow removal from the March 12-14 blizzard, Gov. Douglas Wilder announced Monday.

However, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has limited its allocations to costs incurred from plowing principal and emergency-access roads. Funding has not been approved for costs related to sanding, salting, hauling and disposing of snow.

Wilder requested assistance in a March 17 letter to President Clinton, citing an estimated $16 million in storm costs. The state Department of Emergency Services estimated that cost at $18.7 million Monday, and expected additional tallies of costs.

If FEMA decides to make a major disaster declaration for Virginia, it could free up federal funds to cover 75 percent of the costs.
