DEAF, BLIND SCHOOL CITED FOR VIOLATIONS

The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, stung last year by charges of sexual abuse, has failed to meet more than 20 safety and other standards, according to a state audit.

State inspectors cited 22 deficiencies but called the violations minor. They included safety and maintenance problems and faulty paperwork. The report completed in December is part of Virginia's licensing and certification process for schools.

The school met about 97 percent of the standards checked by state auditors.

Officials at the school, which is closed for the holiday break, were not available for comment Thursday.

In 1991, students reported being molested or raped on school grounds and the school was criticized for failing to pursue one boy's complaints of abuse at the hands of a school employee.
