THE TIPOFF

AMERICAN CLASSIC: John McCutcheon, the multi-instrumentalist, storyteller and folksinger, will present a concert Saturday night at 7 at Covington High School.

McCutcheon is a master of the hammer dulcimer, banjo, fiddle, guitar and other tools. He tells a vivid story, and his voice makes for a warm delivery of his Appalachian folk songs.

He is nationally known and a Virginia resident, and his programs appeal to all ages.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children under 12. Call 962-2181 for more information.\ R&B: Eight to the Bar, a traveling band, returns to the Coffee Pot in Roanoke tonight for more of its blend of swing and rhythm-and-blues.

The group will play tonight and Saturday night. The venerable night spot and restaurant can be reached at 774-8256.\ TAKE A TRIP: Prince Kolani and the Ishangi Family Dancers will present "A Journey to Africa" on Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 8 to 9:30 p.m. at E.C. Glass High School auditorium in Lynchburg.

The tour aims to promote world peace. Donations to the Health Clinic Project in Togo, West Africa, will be accepted.\ STARTING LINEUP: Hank Aaron, baseball's home-run king, will appear in Richmond on Jan. 9 and 10 at the Winter Sportscard Classic at the exhibition hall of the Virginia State Fairgrounds.

He'll be one of several sports stars signing autographs for a fee at the event. The Jan. 9 schedule:

The productions will be "In the Presence" by Sallie Bingham and "Partial Objects" by Sherry Kramer. Tickets will run $8 to $11.
