UVA WOMEN BEATEN 91-84 BY OHIO STATE

Freshman Katie Smith scored 35 points as 20th-ranked Ohio State defeated fifth-ranked Virginia 91-84 Saturday in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge women's basketball doubleheader.

Virginia (8-2) scored the first nine points, but Ohio State took the lead for good with 10:55 remaining in the first half as one of Smith's 3-pointers capped a 9-2 run.

Smith hit four of her six 3-point field-goal attempts.

Ohio State (8-0) expanded a 51-46 halftime lead with a 9-0 run to lead 60-46 with 17:17 left.

Smith helped seal the win with two free throws that put Ohio State up 85-77 with 3:56 remaining.

The Cavaliers pulled to five points behind the Buckeyes three times, the last with 19 seconds left. A 3-pointer by Amy Lofstedt cut the lead to 89-84.

Also scoring in double figures for the Buckeyes were Averrill Roberts with 19 and Nikki Keyton and Audrey Burcy with 11 apiece.

The leading scorer for Virginia was Heather Burge with 24 points. Her twin, Heidi Burge, had 23, and Dena Evans added 10 points.

In the second game, Jessie Hicks' two free throws with 1:30 to play put Maryland ahead for good as the sixth-ranked Terrapins, who trailed most of the way, defeated eighth-ranked Purdue 73-69.

Hicks' free throws made the score 67-65 and a basket by Malissa Boles with 48 seconds to play boosted the lead to 69-65. Both teams traded free throws after that.

Maryland (8-1) did not lead until Michele Andrew's two free throws with 3:13 to play made the score 63-62.
