Indoor archery4 Archery has become a year-round affair, thanks to indoor ranges like the one operated near Hanging Rock by Sherwood Archers. The club has a meeting scheduled Monday, 7 p.m. to organize its winter leagues.
In addition, there will be a number of shoots designed for anyone who just wants to show up and participate. January dates for such matches are the 9th and 23rd. Archers are classified according to their skill and can begin shooting anytime between 1 and 7 p.m., said Steve Smith, the club's vice president (345-4945). A total of 60 shots are fired at 20-yard targets. A modest fee is charged.
For bowhunters who enjoy shooting life-like game targets outdoors, the club will sponsor a Top Gun 3-D shoot Jan. 17, noon to 3 p.m.
Near the juncture of Virginia 311 and 863 at Hanging Rock, follow Virginia 1404 two miles to the range.
\ Casting kids
9 Youngsters ages 7 to 14 will be given the opportunity to display their skills with a fishing rod during RUBBERMAID-BASSMASTER CastingKids competition in Roanoke County on Jan. 9.
One of hundreds of such events in 45 states, participants have a chance to "hook" prizes. They even can earn a college scholarship if they advance to the finals at the BASS Masters Classic in August.
The local competition will be 10 a.m. to noon at the Roanoke County Police Department-Public Safety Building, 3568 Peters Creek Road. There is no charge, but at least one parent must be present.
The contest will include pitching, flipping and casting a lure at predetermined distances. Competitors will be divided into two age groups: 7-10, 11-14. Additional information is available from Detective Rick Moorer, 561-8098.
The local sponsors are Star City Bassmasters, Roanoke County Police Department, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The kids will be able to view a number of police and game department displays.
\ Ski Trips
9 Interest in the overnight trips sponsored by the Roanoke Ski Club has been strong, and for good reason, says Norma Davenport, the club's trip director. You get great accommodations at discount prices.
Take the Jan. 9-10 trip to Showshoe-Silver Creek in West Virginia. For $155 you get two and one-half days of skiing, two breakfast buffets, two night's lodging, a Saturday night party and car pooling to the resort. And the lodging is choice, slope-side, said Davenport.
The Snowshoe-Silver Creek trip leader is Chris Pappas, 389-0535. Other outings this month include a Jan. 17 day trip to The Homestead (Mike Burk, 985-0938) and a Jan. 23-24 over-nighter to Canaan Valley, W.Va. (Frank Cook, 989-5940).
\ The BASSARAMA
22 If it has anything to do with bass and bass fishing, chances are you will see it at BASSARAMA 93, scheduled Jan. 22-24 at the Virginia State Fairgrounds in Richmond. In its 14th year, the event has earned the title of "the East Coast's best bass show."
There will be 120,000-square feet of exhibits featuring the latest fishing tackle and boats, along with seminars by some of the country's top pros: Shaw Grigsby, Ken Cook, Zell Rowland, Gary Klein, Woo Daves, Lonnie Stanley and Ken Penrod.
Show hours Jan. 22 are 11 to 8; Jan. 23, 9 to 8; Jan. 24, 9 to 5. Admission is $6 for adults; $1 for kids under 16; free for kids under 12. Additional information is available form the sponsor, Tangier Productions, 703-898-0832.
