MITCHELL, JOHN WILLIAM
MITCHELL, John William, 89, of Roanoke, died January 5, 1993 after a long
illness. He was known as Bill to his many friends, but was daddy Bill to his
immediate family. Born at Elk Creek in Grayson County, he was the son of the
late Thomas William and Ada Delp Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell spent most of this
working days in McDowell County, W.Va., where he retired from Purity Baking
Co. in Welch and then moved to Roanoke, where he worked for the Macke Co.
(Service America) for almost 20 years. Mr. Mitchell was affiliated with the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for a number of years. He is survived
by his wife of 54 1/2 years, Alice Robertson Mitchell; two sons and their
wives, Thomas B. and Charlotte Peery Mitchell, Charleston, W.Va., John H. and
Martha M. Mitchell, Colonial Heights; three granddaughters, Kathy Wolfe and
husband, Doug, Dunbar, W.Va., Karen and Mindy Mitchell, Charleston, W.Va.; two
grandsons, Scott Mitchell, Radford University, Radford; Thomas Mitchell, Mary
Washington College, Fredericksburg; one great-grandson, James Mitchell Wolfe,
Dunbar, W.Va.; two brothers and their wives, James and Mary Mitchell, Memphis,
Tenn., Earl P. and Nita Mitchell, Montgomery, Ala.; two sisters, Ruth
Snelbaker, Fairfax, Anna Edwards, Oxford, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family
suggest that memorials be made to First Christian Church, 344 Church Ave.,
S.W., Roanoke, Va. 24016. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Oakey's North
Chapel with the Rev. James E. Rivers officiating. Interment will be 1 p.m.
Friday in the Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery, Grayson County. The
family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at
Oakey's North Chapel.
