TERRY IS DOING HER DUTY

GOV. DOUG Wilder's current persistent witch-hunt of Attorney General Mary Sue Terry seems to be a concentrated effort to overshadow the fact that the executive board of the Virginia Retirement System has not performed its duties according to the regulations and policies of the system. If Terry's responsibilities as attorney general do not include concern for the proper administration of the retirement fund of the employees and retirees of Virginia, who then will keep an eye on an appointed board?

I am a long-time member of the system. As payroll clerk, I work directly with those retirement-system staff members in the trenches who have proved themselves equal to the tasks assigned them. They, as well as I, deserve a board that oversees the management of the fund justly, prudently and efficiently. Virginia's retirement fund does not need to go the way of many public and private funds - out the window.

Back off, Gov. Wilder, and give the attorney general's office the space to perform its duties - one of the first being to the people of this state who work diligently to keep Virginia moving forward. Don't be so quick to cry racism each time your opinions or actions are questioned. You were elected by the people - not blacks or whites - of this state, which is a fact you forget all too often. I made the mistake of voting for you once. Never again. BARBARA A. CONNER MONETA
