FINAL COACH SET TO JOIN TECH
Former Arkansas offensive line coach J.B. Grimes is expected to fill the last vacancy on Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer's staff, the Roanoke Times & World-News has learned.Grimes arrived in Blacksburg on Sunday, and sources close to Tech said the 37-year-old Clarendon, Ark., native will become Tech's next offensive line coach. Grimes' wife said she didn't know if the deal had been formalized, but spoke of plans to sell the couple's home in Fayetteville, Ark.
Grimes would be the third coach to join Tech's staff since the end of the Hokies' 2-8-1 season, along with defensive coordinator Phil Elmassian and defensive line coach Rod Sharpless.
Grimes replaces Steve Marshall, who went to Tennessee, but he will not become Tech's offensive coordinator. That job, sources say, is expected to go to quarterbacks coach Rickey Bustle.
Grimes would not have been retained by new Arkansas coach Danny Ford, the Arkansas Democrat had reported. Grimes had been the offensive tackles/tight ends coach since 1989, his second stint with the Razorbacks.
His first came as a graduate assistant under Lou Holtz from 1981-82. He spent one year at Delta State and one at Missouri before moving to Northeast Louisiana from 1985-88. In the spring of 1989 he worked for Mississippi State before joining Ken Hatfield's Arkansas staff that fall.
Grimes turned down the chance to accompany Hatfield to Clemson in 1990.
