MAN SENTENCED FOR SHOOTING AT CAMPSITE
A Tazewell County man was sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty in Giles County Circuit Court to maliciously wounding a Montgomery County man at a campsite near Ripplemead in late August.Emory Lee Cantrell, 26, of Richlands was one of two men shot by Alva Clark Porterfield after Porterfield was attacked with a large stick of wood while the three men gathered firewood near the New River Aug. 29, Commonwealth's Attorney James Hartley said. Cantrell's camping companion, Timothy DeWayne Casey, 19, also of Richlands, died shortly after being shot once in the chest with a small-caliber weapon. Cantrell was shot once in the chest and was treated at Giles Memorial Hospital and released.
Cantrell was indicted in October. Porterfield was not charged in the shooting.
Authorities said Cantrell was charged with malicious wounding because evidence showed Cantrell was responsible for the altercation that led Porterfield to shoot Cantrell and Casey.
Hartley said that according to the evidence, Cantrell and Casey had moved their campsite near where Porterfield and two other people were camping because the river began to rise.
The two people with Porterfield went into the tents to sleep but Porterfield stayed up, talking with Cantrell and Casey.
The three men went to gather firewood and Cantrell hit Porterfield in the head with a large piece of wood, Hartley said.
Porterfield ran back to the tents, bleeding, and told one of his friends to get his gun, a .22-caliber pistol. The two men were coming toward him and Porterfield told them to stay away and fired a warning shot, the commonwealth's attorney said. But the men kept advancing, and Porterfield shot Cantrell in the chest. Cantrell fell down, but Casey kept coming toward Porterfield, Hartley said, and Porterfield shot him, too.
Cantrell told investigators he and Casey had a lot to drink that evening. At first, Cantrell claimed Porterfield started the fight but later admitted he hit Porterfield without provocation, Hartley said. Porterfield and his companions reported the shootings by going to a house to use a telephone.
