PIONEERS GET PAST EAGLES IN 2 OTS

It took two overtimes, but Fort Chiswell got past Auburn 100-98 in Mountain Empire District boys' basketball on Tuesday night.

B.W. Hill tossed in 29 points and Steve Widner added 24 in the Pioneers' victory.

Widner hit five consecutive 3-pointers and finished 5-for-6 from long range. Jody Burnett scored 18 and Shane Carico 11 for Fort Chiswell (7-2 overall, 5-2 district).

Terry Millirons had 27 points, Jon Reed 20, Andy Johnson 17 and Bradley Hudgins 16 for the Eagles (6-4, 4-3), who have lost three straight.

Auburn made 26 of 45 free throws; Fort Chiswell converted 13 of 32.

\ Narrows 66\ Shawsville 44

NARROWS - A 12-0 run midway through the fourth quarter sent the Green Wave to a big Mountain Empire District win over the Shawnees.

Anthony Wiley scored 20 to lead Narrows (5-3, 4-2) and Chad Fleeman and Jeff White added 12 each.

Keith Martin had 16 for the Shawnees (2-8, 1-6), and Jeremy Nicholls chipped in 10.

\ Heritage 66\ Pulaski County 55

LYNCHBURG - Marvin Irving scored 15 points and Brian Hunter 14 as the Pioneers whipped the Cougars in a non-district game.

Heritage (4-6) led virtually all the way, building a 14-point cushion midway in the third quarter. An 11-2 run enabled Pulaski County (7-3) to pull to 46-41 after three quarters, but the Cougars never drew closer.

Chris Foster paced the Cougars with 17 points, and Eric Webb had 10.

\ Alleghany 70\ Christiansburg 48

COVINGTON - The undefeated Mountaineers won their ninth in a row by defeating the Demons in a non-district game.

For Alleghany, Todd Wheatley had 11 rebounds and 13 points, including eight in the first half; Tommy Crawford came off the bench to score 10 points, including eight in the first half; Michael Hunter had 11 points, all in the first half; and Jermaine Winston added 10 points.

John Hairston led Christiansburg (1-9) with 13 points.

\ Jefferson Forest 71\ Staunton River 53

FOREST - Ryan Gilleland hit two 3-point plays and led a balanced attack in Jefferson Forest's Seminole District victory.

The Golden Eagles (5-5, 5-5) were paced by Geoff Zimmerman with 12 points. \ Parry McCluer 61\ Craig County 41

BUENA VISTA - Jason Baker's 12 points paced the Fighting Blues, who led all the way in the Pioneer District romp.

Parry McCluer (6-1, 2-1) led 15-8 after one quarter and never looked back.

Robby Huffman led the Rockets (5-5, 0-2) with 23 points.

\ Gateway Christian 85\ Pipestem Christian 67

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Crusaders had five players score in double figures in an easy victory.

Brad Ewing had 27 points, Sam Moore 18, David Arthur 14, Steve Brookman 14 and Tommy Brookman 12 as Gateway Christian (5-1) built a 44-27 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way.

Pipestem Christian got 22 points from John Cunhill.

\ Altavista 85\ Liberty 68

ALTAVISTA - Sherman Pannell, Mark Johnson and Eddie McMillan combined for 62 points, leading the Colonels past the Minutemen in a Seminole District game.

Pannell's 25 points paced Altavista (8-2, 8-2), Johnson had 20 and McMillan 17.

David Ross led Liberty (3-7, 3-7) with 14 points.
