ROANOKE SHAKES OFF EAGLES

With the game tempo and crowd intensity reduced to chess-match level, Roanoke College enjoyed some good nap time in its Bast Center matchup with Bridgewater on Thursday night.

Trapped in the Eagles' uncomfortably slow pace, the break-happy Maroons suffered through seven scoreless spells of more than two minutes. Roanoke went dry for more than three minutes four times.

But the Maroons used a key 10-0 second-half run to shake off the sandman and the Eagles for a 60-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win.

Roanoke (10-2 overall, 5-1 ODAC) has won six straight, including five consecutive league games. The Maroons are off to their best start in 10 seasons.

"We can adjust to any style of game," said Roanoke coach Page Moir, whose team entered Thursday's game averaging nearly 90 points per game. "We've won a couple of games in the 60s. We've been tested a variety of ways."

The ODAC's two most accurate teams didn't play like it. Bridgewater (6-7, 4-4) shot 43 percent from the field, nine points below its average; Roanoke shot 38.5 percent, nearly 13 points below its average.

The Maroons trailed 30-25 at halftime and 44-40 with 11:10 remaining. But Mike Thornton and Kevin Martin hit back-to-back 3-pointers, Martin and Bill Cross each hit a pair of free throws and Roanoke burst on top for good, 50-40 with 7:23 left.

Martin led Roanoke with four 3-pointers and 19 points, 12 in the second half. His four-point play, a 3-pointer plus a free throw, gave the Maroons a 54-47 lead at 4:44.

Hillary Scott scored 12 of Roanoke's first 19, but then went more than 24 minutes without a point. He scored the Maroons' last four points of the game at the free-throw line and finished with 16.

Ashley Watson had 16 and Jeff Berry 14 to lead the Eagles.
