GRAYSON ESCAPES NARROWS

Mitch Hawks scored 19 points as Grayson County topped Narrows 40-33 in a Mountain Empire District boys' high school basketball game Friday night.

The Blue Devils (7-3 overall, 6-1 district) stunted a strong start by Narrows, preventing the Green Wave from scoring any field goals in the second quarter and outscoring Narrows 11-2.

Patrick Bailey scored 14 points and Chad Fleeman added 11 to lead Narrows (5-4, 4-3). \

Floyd County 71

Auburn 64

FLOYD - Jason Light starred as the Buffaloes built a 13-point lead through the first three quarters and coasted to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Eagles.

Light, a 6-foot-6 center, had 23 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Mike Hylton added 17 points and Jeremiah Slusher 13 for Floyd (5-2, 5-2).

Jon Reed had 17 points, Terry Millirons 14, Joey Lyons 12 and Andy Johnson 10 for Auburn (6-5, 4-4). \

Galax 56

Shawsville 47

SHAWSVILLE - Galax's Jeff Spells scored the 1,000th point of his high school career as the Maroon Tide beat the Shawnees in a Mountain Empire District game.

Shawsville (2-9, 1-7), which trailed 32-10 at halftime, got 11 points each from Joey Underwood and Jeremy Nichols.

For Galax (6-2, 5-1), Spells finished with 21 points and Wilbert Campbell added 11, all in the second half. \

Bland 38

Giles 37

BLAND - The Spartans nearly erased a five-point deficit in the final three seconds but came up short against the Rockets in the Mountain Empire District.

Bland led 38-33 when Stephen Stephens hit a free throw to close the gap to four points. A Bland turnover gave Giles a final shot, a 3-pointer at the buzzer, that wasn't enough.

Kevin King paced the Rockets (5-4, 4-4) with 14 points.

Patrick Steele had 11 for Giles (2-6, 2-5), which was 3-of-21 on free throws. \

Liberty 68

Rustburg 45

RUSTBURG - Freshman Greg Reynolds was the difference in leading the Minutemen (4-7, 4-7) to a Seminole District victory over the Red Devils (0-11, 0-11).

Reynolds sank four 3-point goals and finished with 18 points.

Rustburg was led by Warrick Morgan with 17 points. \

Carroll County 50

HILLSVILLE - The Cavaliers used a full-court press to hold the Demons to four points in the third quarter and win the New River District opener for both teams.

Junior center John Wolford had eight of his game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter for Carroll County (4-8, 1-0). Stephen Dalton had 11 points.

Christiansburg (1-10, 0-1) did not have a double-figures scorer. \

MONETA - Coach Stuart Richardson earned his 200th career victory as the Colonels won a Seminole District game over the Golden Eagles.

Sherman Pannell fired in 27 points and Mark Johnson added 19 as Altavista (9-2, 9-2) pulled away in the final 3 1/2 minutes.

Staunton River (5-6, 5-6) trailed by four when its star player, Eric Flood, went down with an ankle injury. Flood had 25 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. \

Jefferson Forest 64

Buckingham County 51

FOREST - Ryan Gilleland scored 19 points as the Cavaliers rolled over the Knights for a Seminole District win.

Anthony Poindexter scored 15 points and Thomas Sweeney added 14 to pace Jefferson Forest (7-4, 7-4).

The lone double-digit scorer for Buckingham County (2-9, 2-9) was Lewis Jones with 21 points. \

Pulaski County 72

E.C. Glass 52

DUBLIN - Chris Foster had 21 points to lead four Cougars in double figures as Pulaski County routed the Hilltoppers in a non-district game.

Eric Webb, 8-of-8 on free throws, had 18 points for the Cougars (8-3). Monte Brown added 14 and Tyrone Hash 10.

The Hilltoppers were down 17-3 in the first quarter but scored the final eight points of the second period to pull to 35-29 at halftime.

E.C. Glass shot 15 percent in the third quarter, when it was outscored 20-4. Dexter Hubbard scored 12 points, Shawn Brown 11 and Shawn West 10 for the Hilltoppers (4-9). \

Gateway Christian 77

Temple 27

ABINGDON - Tommy Brookman scored 21 points as the Crusaders blew past Temple for a non-district win.

David Arthur paced Gateway Christian (5-1) with 12 points and Sam Moore had 12 assists as the Crusaders held all Temple scorers to single digits. \

Girls

William Fleming 55

Franklin County 45

Marqueetta Randolph had 27 points and 17 rebounds as the Colonels defeated the Eagles for a Roanoke Valley District victory.

William Fleming dominated through three quarters, outscoring Franklin County 15-6 in the third. The Eagles rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Colonels 14-5, but came up short.

Bridgett Joyce had 10 assists for William Fleming (7-3, 2-2).

Heather Aveline scored 11 points and Patsy Campbell added 12 for Franklin County (7-3, 2-2). \
