N.C. OFFICIALS SAY FIRM DECEIVED CONTRIBUTORS
State regulators have threatened to revoke the license of a Richmond, Va., company that raises money for charities, saying that it violated state law by deceiving donors.Regulators sent BSN Associates Inc. a letter last week giving the company 10 days to answer the charges before their state licenses are revoked. Alberti Entertainment Productions Inc. of Sarasota, Fla., received a similar letter.
The presidents of both companies told the Winston-Salem Journal Friday that they will comply with the state's request and that they expect to keep their licenses.
Lionel J. Randolph, the head of the state's Charitable Solicitations Branch, sent BSN a revocation notice after a woman in Raleigh complained that a man called her in December and said he was with America's Missing Children and was raising money to help find missing children in the state. The woman requested more information but was told that she would have to make a pledge first. She refused. Randolph said he received two similar complaints.
The caller was working for BSN, which has a contract with the charity to raise money.
