FEW JOBS FOR PROFESSIONALS HERE
HOORAY for Mayor Bowers! In a recent speech to the Williamson Road Action Forum, he stated that our local governments need to work together if the valley is to grow economically. The highest priority of all our local governments should be to work together to bring more jobs into the valley.More and more professionals are forced to leave the area because there just aren't professional jobs available in the area. For example, the data-processing department was one of the hardest hit in the Dominion Bank layoffs. It seems like lower-paying jobs are coming into our area. Even Lynchburg appears to be bypassing Roanoke in bringing in professional jobs.
Roanoke is a great place to live and raise children but, unless jobs are provided, professionals may be forced to move where good jobs are available. Something needs to be done or Roanoke is going to become a town of retirees and minimum-wage workers. SANDRA ROBERTS VINTON
