KNIGHTS NO MATCH FOR FLEMING PRESSURE

Another outing, another blowout for William Fleming.

With quick-handed defensive pressure and tag-team transition offense, the Colonels rolled over Cave Spring 75-51 on Friday night for their ninth consecutive lopsided victory in boys' basketball.

Fleming (10-2 overall, 3-0 Roanoke Valley District) was cozy with its 17-point halftime lead, and a 20-7 run to start the second half left no doubt about the outcome.

Carlos Rhodes scored nine points, Jemare Crump had seven and Derrick Hines four during the decisive run that left the Colonels with a 63-33 lead with 6:56 left.

"We picked up our defensive pressure, caused some turnovers and got the fast break going," said Rhodes, who led Fleming with 19 points. "We wanted to push that lead out."

The Knights (5-9, 1-3) scored six points in the third quarter and had only a free throw to show for the final 6:57 of the period.

Hines, Fleming's sophomore point guard, drove the length of the floor in five seconds and scored on a driving layup at the buzzer to give the Colonels a 59-32 lead.

Hines finished with 16 points, and he and Rhodes combined to score as many field goals (14) as Cave Spring.

Crump had seven of his nine points in the third quarter. He took the offensive baton from first-half heroes Phillip Lacey and Reggie Reynolds, who scored all of their combined 19 points in the first two quarters.

Matt Matheny, with 11 points, led 10 scoring Knights. Cave Spring played without starter Robbie Hibbs, who served a one-game disciplinary suspension.

"Playing without Hibbs hurt us, but we just didn't do the little things, like stepping in to take the charge," said Cave Spring coach Rick Crotts. "But Fleming is so daggone quick, that's tough to do. They're by far the best team we've seen."

Rhodes hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter. His first kicked off a 10-point, 97-second burst that gave Fleming a 34-17 lead with 4:20 to play in the half. Lacey scored five during the run.

Cave Spring hit four free throws in the final 36 seconds of the half to pull to 43-26.

"Those were four points I thought we should have made them work harder for, but I wasn't upset," said Fleming coach Burrall Paye. "We only gave up six points in the third quarter, and we played awful well."

The Colonels' winning streak will be on the line tonight at the Roanoke Civic Center against nationally ranked Oak Hill (19-0). Fleming plays the No. 3-ranked Warriors in the second of three games of the Crestar Classic.

"We're excited, but we're not nervous," Rhodes said. "We have to just really focus on the game and not let them take us out of it."
