1-ON-1 TAX ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR ELDERLY
The League of Older Americans, in cooperation with the American Association of Retired Persons and the Internal Revenue Service, is providing free one-on-one assistance to low- and moderate-income older taxpayers from Monday through April 15.Trained volunteers will be available to help individuals with federal and state personal income tax returns.
Appointments can be made at the following places and times:
Melrose Towers LOA office, 3038 Melrose Ave. N.W., Tuesdays, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 344-1065 (call between 9 a.m. and noon).
Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3911 Greenland Ave. N.W., Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 345-0451.
Ogden Senior Center, 2932 Ogden Road S.W., Wednesdays, 1-3 p.m., Thursdays, 1-4 and 6-9 p.m., 772-7505.

There is no charge for the service, but donations will be accepted. Those seeking assistance should bring copies all pertinent documents. Volunteers needed to help Asian refugees
The Roanoke office of Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services needs volunteers to help newly arriving families from Southeast Asia get settled in the Roanoke Valley.
The families will need help with getting driver's licenses, finding their way around, comparison shopping and other tasks of daily life.
Tutors also are needed to teach conversational English. No teaching experience is required, and training and materials are provided. Tutoring schedules are flexible.

Fely Clark of Roanoke was honored recently by Modern Woodmen of America Camp 11371 Clark for her service to the community.
Clark serves as chairman and founder of the Phillipine American Cultural Affairs of Southwest Virginia, a group that promotes understanding and appreciation of Phillipine history and culture. She also does volunteer tutoring and collects books to send to poor neighborhoods in the Phillipine Islands.
