UVA LANDS BIG RECRUIT

Virginia landed one of its biggest football recruits, literally and figuratively, when 6-foot-6, 300-pound Darryl Gilliam committed to the Cavaliers.

Gilliam, said to have NFL potential by SuperPrep magazine, played offensive and defensive tackle for St. John's High School in Washington, D.C., but wants to concentrate on defense in college.

Gilliam picked the Cavaliers over Maryland and Tennessee. He has scored over 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test but must improve his grades in the core curriculum to qualify for a Division I scholarship.

Gilliam is the 15th player to have made a commitment to the Cavaliers, although lineman Quincey Holloway from Camden, N.J., is wavering as he awaits word on whether he has been accepted into school.

In other recruiting, VMI received commitments from Keith Braxton, a 6-foot, 235-pound linebacker from Patrick Henry High School in Ashland and lineman Terry Minor (6-2, 210) from Highland Springs.

Billy Hollows from Episcopal High School, the top kicking prospect in the state, committed to Wake Forest.
