GIVE THE NEW PRESIDENT A CHANCE
RECENTLY, I was eating breakfast at a local restaurant when I became involved in a discussion about the inauguration of Bill Clinton as our country's new president. What amazed me during this discussion was that Clinton had not been on the job for 24 hours, and already he was being criticized by a couple of dyed-in-the-wool Republicans. One person was already mentioning the word "impeachment."I do not deny the fact that these critics have the freedom and right to criticize Clinton. However, how can you (justly) criticize someone who has not had a chance to prove what he can or cannot do?
Let's wait about four years and then critique Clinton's performance as commander-in-chief. If we, the voting public, like what he has accomplished at the end of this four-year period, then let's re-elect him. Likewise, if Clinton's performance as president is deemed a failure then we, as voters, have the power to unite and vote him out of office.
I, as a young "baby boomer," am greatly concerned about the future of this country. I am afraid that if we do not stop being a divided nation of Republicans vs. Democrats, blacks vs. whites, haves vs. have-nots, etc., the United States is doomed for bad times and failure. WARREN L. BROCK ROANOKE
