KAREN ANDERSON
Music is an important part of Karen Anderson's life. She plays piano and serves as organist and choir member at First Baptist Church on Jefferson Street. It's only natural that Anderson's love of music carries over into her Roanoke classroom. "I sing and play the piano a lot," said Anderson. "I try to find songs to go with the lessons." "She's a very good teacher and always makes learning fun," said the pupil who nominated her.
Another hobby of Anderson's is reading, her favorite subject to teach. "We write stories, draw pictures to go with them and read them to each other," she said. "If I can start them early, the reading and writing skills will carry them through life."
Anderson, who has spent all 16 of her years as an educator at Monterey, said she enjoys teaching second-graders because "they are enthusiastic, helpful and almost always nice to each other."
