`ORDINARIES' AUTHOR TO GIVE LECTURE, CONCERT

Singer-author Kate Long will give a combined lecture and concert Wednesday at Emory & Henry College, drawing on her experiences as a West Virginia journalist.

Her presentation at 7:30 p.m. in Byars Hall will be in the form of songs and reading selections from her new book titled "Ordinaries."

The new novel gets its title from the idea that what is ordinary to one person may not be to others. She is also the author of "Johnny's Such a Bright Boy, What a Shame He's Retarded," and recently completed a collection of songs on cassette tape titled "Pieces of Heart."

Now employed as a writing coach with the Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette and commentator with West Virginia Public Radio, Long has worked as a counselor for runaway teens and for families with handicapped children. She has been board president of a West Virginia citizens' group concerned with environmental issues.
