FRANKLIN COUNTY FIRE LEAVES 2 HOMELESS
A Franklin County couple escaped a fire Monday morning that destroyed their home in the Fork Mountain section. The two-story building off Virginia 608 was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 9:30 a.m., Deputy Fire Chief Ben Cook said. He said the blaze probably began when a chimney got too hot from a fire burning all night and ignited material on the second floor.
The husband and wife awoke to the smell of smoke and ran out of the house with a few pictures and personal belongings, Cook said. Before firefighters arrived, the man re-entered the house and tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but the heat turned him back.
There were no injuries.
About 40 firefighters worked 2 1/2 hours to bring the fire under control, Cook said.
The house was almost a total loss, he said.
