MOTHER IS CONVICTED OF KILLING DAUGHTER, 5

A woman faces up to 20 years in prison and a $100,000 fine after being convicted of murdering her 5-year-old daughter because the child would not eat, authorities said.

Transito Baiza, 30, of Arlington, on Wednesday entered a plea in which she maintained her innocence but acknowledged the evidence against her would lead to a conviction.

Arlington Circuit Judge Benjamin Kendrick convicted her on one count of second-degree murder for the Aug. 3 death of Sena Sorto. The child died of a ruptured small intestine after paramedics found her unconscious in the family's apartment.

A medical examiner found 35 bruises on the girl's abdomen, eyes, cheeks, back, arms and buttocks. - Associated Press
