MAJOR WINS LIBEL AWARD IN BRITAIN
Prime Minister John Major accepted a public apology and an undisclosed financial settlement Friday in libel actions over allegations that he had an affair with a caterer. The woman, Clare Latimer, also was awarded undisclosed damages and an apology from companies that produce and sell the New Statesman and Society, a leftist weekly magazine.
The case thrust Major into the center of a debate about press regulation, which has largely focused on reporting about the royal family, and it renewed the determination of some to pass tougher laws.
