WILL TOUR INCLUDE SLAG MOUNTAINS?
IT SEEMS that every time I pick up the paper someone is having an environmental problem (or about to have one).We live in the Signal Hill section in northwest Roanoke, and on behalf of our entire neighborhood and beyond, I want you to know we have one of the biggest environmental problems around. The city is allowing mountains of slag to be burned, and the ash residue is covering our cars, shrubs, porches - everything! We have been told it's not harmful to breathe, but why should we have to breathe it at all? We had a deck put on our house last spring and it is gray.
We were told we live in an undesirable neighborhood, but who made it that way? The city! (Evidently the tax office doesn't recognize "undesirable" because our taxes keep going up.)
I understand the Department of Recreation and Parks is conducting a tour of our Star City this month. I wonder if we could have our neighborhood included on the "scenic route." We would love to show off our Star City junkyard and our smoldering slag mountains. SHIRLEY A. HUDGINS ROANOKE
