COACH WHITE STOOD ON PRINCIPLES

IN REGARD to Coach Vaught's comments in the Jan. 23 Roanoke Times & World-News, I must reply - even though his comments concerning the cleats fiasco do not merit attention. I respond only because there are those people who might believe his attempt to impugn the integrity of others to deflect attention from his own shortcomings. Let's set the record straight.

Willis White is a stand-up man in a nonstand-up world. He has principles and believes wholeheartedly in those ideals. Without thinking of compromise, he took a stand for what is right and was reprimanded for it. Are we teaching our children that it's OK to cheat if you win? It's a sad day when a proven liar and admitted cheater tries to blame the other guy by contending that he thought the other guy was going to cheat.

The Salem football program can stand up to any review or measuring device. It is Coach White's program and it exemplifies his persona. It was developed through hard work, loyalty and the ability to work together to help Salem football players become the best they can be, on and off the field.

Vaught, what you did was wrong. So face the music and don't try to put the blame on someone else. DANIEL F. WHEELING SALEM
