PULASKI COUNTY GIRLS DEFEAT CAVE SPRING

Cave Spring no longer is perfect in the Roanoke Valley District girls' basketball standings.

Pulaski County saw to that Monday night, holding off the cold-shooting Knights to win 50-45 at Dublin.

Cave Spring (18-3 overall, 10-1 district), which clinched a tie for the district championship last Friday night, can win the title with a victory in its final district game, at William Fleming on Friday night.

Inside players Jodie Hallett and Kim Cruise sparked second-place Pulaski County (12-7, 8-2); Hallett had 15 points and Cruise 14.

The Cougars pounced early, leading 16-11 after one quarter and 31-19 at halftime. The third quarter was even, 13-13, then Cave Spring made a run. Pulaski County, trying to hold the ball, made two turnovers that could have been costly, but Cave Spring did not capitalize.

Amy Athey led Cave Spring with 14 points, and Kim Stewart had 10.

The Cougars made five of eight free throws; the Knights hit 12 of 14.

\ North Cross 46, Hargrave Military 24: After a close first half, the host Raiders (7-11) switched to a tough zone defense in the second half and shut down the Tigers (6-9) on the way to a non-district victory. Brandy Markell, a senior point guard playing her final home game, scored 25 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including three 3-point goals. North Cross got 10 points and seven rebounds from Heather Perry. No Tiger had more than nine points. \
