ETSU, W. CAROLINA HAVE EARLY CONFERENCE LEADS

East Tennessee State's men and Western Carolina's women are in first place after Friday's first day of competition in the Southern Conference Indoor Track Championships at Cormack Field House at VMI in Lexington.

The ETSU men, buoyed by a 1-2-3 finish by Denis Barry, Seamus Power and Rick Patterson in the 3,000 meters, have 41 points. VMI is second with 25, followed by Marshall and Western Carolina with 24 each, Appalachian State with 21, and The Citadel and Tennessee-Chattanooga with 10 each.

Western Carolina's women are in front of five-time defending champion Appalachian State 34-26, with Furman in third at 20. Marshall is next with 15, East Tennessee State and Tennessee-Chattanooga with 14 each, and Davidson with one.

Today's competition begins at 9 a.m.
