INELIGIBLE PLAYER PUTS KINK IN TOURNEY

The Seminole District boys' basketball tournament was put on hold Tuesday when Altavista announced it had used an ineligible player from Feb. 2-19 and would have to forfeit several games.

The player in question was leading scorer Sherman Pannell (29.2 points per game), who participated in a dunking contest for money. Officials of the Seminole District said the violation violated the amateur-status rule in the Virginia High School League handbook.

The tournament was scheduled to start Tuesday night with two games at the Vines Center at Liberty University. New pairings have been drawn, and the tournament will begin tonight with a doubleheader at Brookville and at Rustburg. The tournament will move back to the Vines Center on Friday for the semifinals.

Altavista, which was 17-3, had to forfeit five games and now is 12-8. The Colonels fall to fifth place in the standings and lose their automatic bid to the Region III tournament. Bedford County teams Liberty and Jefferson Forest each pick up a victory.

Amherst County becomes the winner of the regular-season championship and will be the league's No. 1 representative in the Region III tournament next week at the Vines Center.
