UVA WOMEN WRAP UP ACC

Dena Evans had 21 points and a school-record 14 assists as No. 11-ranked Virginia wrapped up the top seeding in the Atlantic Coast Conference women's tournament for the third straight year with an 87-73 victory over 12th-ranked Maryland on Tuesday night.

Heather Burge added 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers (20-5 overall, 12-3 ACC), who got 17 points and seven rebounds from Charleata Beale and eight rebounds from Evans. Monica Bennett led Maryland (19-6, 10-5) with 24 points, Malissa Boles had 20 and Jessie Hicks 16.

Evans, a senior point guard, broke the school's previous game assists record of 12, a mark she had shared with two others.

In another women's game:

\ North Carolina Wesleyan 79, Ferrum 56: At Rocky Mount, N.C., Christa Donofrio scored 18 points, including four 3-point goals, and the host Battlin' Bishops (11-14, 6-5) eliminated the cold-shooting Panthers (9-16, 3-8) from the Dixie Conference tournament in the first round.

Sarah Quesenberry led fifth-seeded Ferrum, which lost to Methodist in last year's final, with 15 points, and Latasha Randon had 13 points. Ferrum was 22-for-65 in the game (34 percent) and 2-for-10 on 3-point tries.

\ Randolph-Macon 61, Hampden-Sydney 58: In Ashland, Troy Smith had 23 points and five rebounds and the Yellow Jackets won their first-round game. Randolph-Macon (17-8) advanced to Thursday's semifinals against Roanoke, a 71-58 winner over Guilford. Hampden-Sydney (12-13) was finished off by the Yellow Jackets' making six of eight free throws in the final 1:44.

\ Virginia Wesleyan 76, Bridgewater 65: In Norfolk, Walt Lassiter had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Marlins to the first-round victory. Lassiter hit three 3-pointers and a layup during a 4-minute burst to put Virginia Wesleyan (17-8) ahead 54-40 with nine minutes remaining. Bridgewater (12-12) never led in the second half.

\ Emory & Henry 62, Eastern Mennonite 49: In Emory, Derek Elmore scored 18 points and the top-seeded Wasps overcame a slow start to advance to Thursday's semifinals against Virginia Wesleyan. Brian Witcher added 16 points for the Wasps (22-3). Vaughn Troyer scored 21 for Eastern Mennonite (7-18).
