CHARGERS ADVANCE IN PIONEER

Bath County missed its first 14 shots, but recovered to beat James River 58-46 in the first round of the Pioneer District boys' tournament Wednesday at Buchanan.

The Chargers will face top-seeded Glenver in Friday's semifinals at Lord Botetourt.

James River, which finished 8-14, bolted to a 9-1 lead while the Chargers were trying to find their shooting touch. Bath County didn't get its first field goal until 1:28 remained in the first quarter.

The Chargers turned up their defensive intensity in the second half, holding the Knights to only five field goals in the third quarter and four in the fourth. Bath County sealed its victory by outscoring the Knights 17-9 in the fourth quarter.

Mike Edwards paced the Chargers (11-11) with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Jody Stegar paced James River (8-14) with 16 points. \

Parry McCluer 95, Highland 56: At Buena Vista, five players hit double figures in points as the second-seeded Blues wiped out Highland.

Nathan Baker scored 17 points to lead Parry McCluer (14-6). Chris Schill paced the Rams (3-18) with 21.

The Fighting Blues will meet Covington in Friday's semifinals at Lord Botetourt. \

Covington 75, Craig County 50: At Covington, the Cougars scored the first 17 points of the game and led 24-3 in a rout of Craig County.

Keeno Jones led Covington with 23 points. Robbie Huffman had 16 for Craig County.
