AIR FORCE RECALLS EARLY-WARNING PLANES

In a further sign of the Cold War's demise, the Air Force announced Friday that it is bringing home AWACS warning and control planes from bases in Iceland and Japan.

The 960th Airborne Warning and Control Squadron, at Keflavik Air Base, Iceland, is being "inactivated," or taken out of operation, and its one AWACS plane will return to Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. The 158 military jobs associated with the Keflavik squadron also will be transferred to Tinker, the Air Force said.

Also, one of three AWACS planes at Kadena Air Base, Japan, will be returned to Tinker, along with 75 military jobs. - Associated Press
