INDIANS CLAIM NEW RIVER TITLE 52-50
In Blacksburg, Tony Wheeler scored nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the top-seeded Blacksburg Indians slipped past Radford 52-50 to capture the New River District boys' basketball title Saturday night.The Bobcats trailed 27-25 at halftime but kept within four points throughout the contest. Wheeler's points gave the Indians (12-10) the edge.
Kris Smith scored 17 points and Casey Underwood had 13 to lead Radford. The Bobcats finished 8-14.
Radford will face Tazewell in the Region IV tournament Tuesday night. As champion, Blacksburg has a bye Tuesday night and will be the host Thursday night. The Indians' opponent has not yet been determined. \

\ Nelson County 69, Liberty 58: In Lynchburg, Tavaras Glover scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Governors rolled past the Minutemen in the first round of the tournament held at Liberty University's Vines Center.
Nelson County led 29-25 at halftime and 46-40 after three quarters. The Governors captured the win by sinking 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter. Tommy Vaughn led Nelson County with 17 points. Anthony Turner and Tyrone Revely scored 13 apiece and Dan Revely had 11. Dave Ross and Jerry Padgett scored 12 points each to lead Liberty. The Minutemen hit 11 of 29 free throws. \
Amherst 56, Staunton River 40: In Lynchburg, Steve Bennett and Lamont Campbell scored 12 points each as the Lancers rolled past the Golden Eagles.
Amherst led 14-10 in the first quarter and 29-18 at halftime as they cruised to the win.
Eric Flood was the only double-digit scorer for Staunton River with 13 points.
Amherst will face the winner of the Jefferson Forest-Altavista contest in the semifinals Monday at 7 p.m. at Liberty University. \
Jefferson Forest 80, Altavista 64: Ryan Gilleland scored 23 and Anthony Poindexter added 16 as the Cavaliers advanced.
Sherman Pannell pumped in 32 for the Colonels. The Cavaliers play Amherst on Monday at 7 p.m. \
