15 gymnasts qualify for state competitionFifteen members of the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics team have qualified for the 1993 Level 5 Virginia State Championships to be held May 15-16 in Virginia Beach.
The gymnasts qualified on the basis of their all-around performances at the Sectional Championship Sunday in Arlington.
They are: Lauren Sisler (34.40), Andrea Stroud (33.85), Sarah Pitman (33.15), Peggy Daffron (33.05), Sierra Roach (32.95), Elizabeth Longley (32.65); Elizabeth Jetton (32.55), Megan Robertson (32.45), Elizabeth Warnick (32.00), Renee Booker (31.40), Mary Beth Umberger (31.30), Leslie Hill (31.00), Samantha Steffek (30.85), Allison Jetton (30.75) and Traci Paxton (30.45).
The competition involved more than 350 competitors from across the state.
Basketball events to aid Camp Virginia Jaycee
The Roanoke Jaycees are seeking three-player teams to compete in a basketball tournament April 17 and children to play in a Hoop-A-Thon April 18.
Both events, which will be held in the Virginia Museum of Transportation's parking lot on Norfolk Avenue, are benefits for Camp Virginia Jaycee, a camp for mentally and physically handicapped children and adults.
The Roanoke Times & World-News 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will feature a double-elimination 3-on-3 event, slam-dunk competitions for players under and over 6 feet tall, a 3-point shooting contest and free-throw competitions. The entry deadline is April 9. The Hoop-A-Thon, from 1-5 p.m. the following day, is open to children age 15 and younger. The minimum pledge is $15.
