BLIZZARD-DAMAGE LOANS AVAILABLE
Farmers who lost livestock or crops in last month's blizzard can apply for emergency loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farmers Home Administration.President Clinton declared an emergency recently for the area that includes Southwest Virginia.
Farmers have eight months to apply for loans. To be eligible, they must have suffered a 30 percent loss of normal production, demonstrate an ability to repay the loan and be unable to obtain credit elsewhere.
Farmers should contact the local FmHA office.
Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, welcomed the loans, saying the blizzard had caused "many family farmers significant losses in produce and other farm products."
