TRUCKER CHARGED IN CRASH

A tractor-trailer on U.S. 460 in Bedford County crashed into the rear of a pickup truck that was stopped behind an unloading school bus Tuesday afternoon, then ran off the road and overturned, state police said.

The tractor-trailer's driver, Robley Loving, 61, of Madison Heights, was charged with reckless driving. Trooper Mark Scarce said the truck's brakes were faulty and Loving was loaded down and traveling 50 to 55 mph, and "had to ride it out."

Debris sprayed the school bus, breaking some windows, but none of the children was injured, Scarce said. Neither was the driver of the pickup, which was virtually demolished when the tractor-trailer ran over the top of its bed.

The tractor-trailer was hauling fuel oil. Scarce said about 200 gallons - mostly from the tractor-trailer's own tanks - spilled onto the ground. Cleanup lasted until about 9:30 p.m., with most of the time spent pumping the truck's contents into another tanker.

Loving was wearing a seatbelt, Scarce said. He was treated for minor injuries and released from Bedford Memorial Hospital.
