`DENBIGH MADAM' FACES TAX CHARGES
The appointment books of a woman who pleaded guilty to running a brothel will be used as evidence against her in a tax case, a city prosecutor says. The ledgers contain the names of alleged clients of the woman, Toni Thomas, along with notations believed to represent income, according to a Newport News police official. None of the names has been made public.
The books and Thomas' admissions to a detective "will be our best evidence of her income," Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis Duncan said.
Thomas is accused of not reporting taxable income for 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991, according to John McCauley, manager of the state Department of Taxation's criminal investigations unit.
She will be tried on the tax charges in General District Court on Monday. Each misdemeanor charge carries a penalty of a year in jail and a fine up to $2,500.
In January, Thomas pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of running a brothel from her town house.
She is to be tried later this month on two felony charges: pandering from prostitution and soliciting a minor to engage in a sex act, Duncan said.
