CHRISTIANSBURG MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE
A Christiansburg man was arrested Thursday, three days after a Blacksburg woman told police the man stayed in her apartment all night after raping her in her bedroom early Sunday.James R. Winfrey, 19, was charged with one count of forcible rape and was being held without bond, according to the Blacksburg Police Department.
The woman, who said she knew Winfrey, told police that Winfrey came to her home Saturday night to visit her and a couple who live there. After going to bed, she said she awoke around 1 a.m. Sunday and found him in the room with her.
The other couple was asleep at the time of the alleged rape, Detective A.Y. Miesen said. The woman reported the rape Monday afternoon.
Police interviewed Winfrey on Tuesday and gave him a polygraph test on Thursday. Winfrey was arrested after taking the lie-detector test.
Miesen described the relationship between Winfrey and the woman as an acquaintanceship, with no romantic involvement. She said there were no weapons involved in the alleged incident and alcohol was not a factor.
