SWOOPES GETS DRAFTED BY MEN'S LEAGUE
Sheryl Swoopes, who led Texas Tech to the NCAA women's basketball title and was named Player of the Year, on Wednesday became the second woman drafted by a U.S. Basketball League team. She was selected by the Daytona Beach Hooters. Swoopes has said she planned to play professionally in Europe because there is no women's league in the United States.
"When we saw the NCAA championship game when she scored 47 points, we knew she could play," coach and general manager Rex Morgan said.
The other woman drafted by the 8-year-old USBL was Cheryl Miller, taken by Staten Island in 1986. Nancy Lieberman became the first woman to play in a men's professional league when she played for Springfield in 1986 and Long Island in 1987.
Since the league's inception in 1985, 78 players have gone to the NBA from the USBL.
Swoopes, 6-foot, averaged 28 points, 9.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.4 steals this season.
