UVA HANDLES HOKIES AT HOME 6-2
Virginia pounded Virginia Tech pitcher Ron Preston for six runs in five innings and the Cavaliers defeated the Hokies 6-2 in college baseball Wednesday in Charlottesville.The Hokies (20-8) were hurt by five errors; the Cavaliers (14-20) had no errors. Tim Coughlin and Travis Barbary had two hits and an RBI each for UVa. David Fitt, Bo Durcak and Dee Dalton had two hits each for Tech, which defeated the Cavs 6-1 in Blacksburg earlier this season. The teams play again next Wednesday in Salem's Municipal Field at 7 p.m.
In other baseball:
At Martinsville, Elon College's Rob Hahne pitched a two-hit shutout as Elon beat Ferrum 3-0. Hahne struck out eight and walked four. Ferrum is 16-5; Elon is 26-12-1.
Kevin McNamara's RBI double in the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and Richmond knocked off VMI 5-2 in Lexington.
