NEW ATTACK CALLS ALLEN SURE LOSER

A letter calling Republican George Allen a sure loser in the fall race for governor is a desperate tactic by one of his GOP rivals, an Allen spokesman said Wednesday.

"They are getting nastier and we expect this sort of assault," Ken Stroupe said of the letter sent to GOP convention delegates by Robert D. Kilpatrick, a supporter of candidate Earle Williams.

Stroupe said Allen's polling shows he still has the support of 59 percent of the delegates, who are free to change their minds before the June 5 convention.

Kilpatrick, a retired business executive from Goochland County, considered running for governor himself before backing Williams, another retired businessman. Also in the race is Shenandoah Del. Clinton Miller.

In his letter to Rep. Thomas Bliley, Allen's campaign chairman, Kilpatrick said Allen accomplished little while he served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Virginia House of Delegates.

"As they say in Texas, he's all hat and no cattle," Kilpatrick wrote.

He said the certain Democratic nominee, former Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, would hammer Allen's opposition to handgun purchase limits, his conflicting statements on abortion and his support of tax increases.

"I'm going to shout `there is nothing there' before the naked emperor gets on the street and George Allen becomes our party's losing candidate," Kilpatrick wrote.

Kilpatrick also said Bliley is supporting Allen because Allen gave up his seat in Congress when both were placed in the same district during reapportionment two years ago.

Bliley said he supports Allen because he has experience running for office and can beat Terry.

Kilpatrick's charges against Allen are "terrible," Bliley said. "We have enough problems taking on Democrats."
