ETC.-VIRGINIA TECH'S ALFANO GAINS ANOTHER HONOR
At Atlanta, Virginia Tech women's basketball coach Carol Alfano was named the 1993 Converse District 3 Coach of the Year. The nine district coaches of the year are selected by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Alfano, also named Metro Conference and VaSID All-State coach of the year, guided the Hokies to a school-record 20 wins.
The Virginia Tech softball team will play a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday at Salem's Moyer Complex. The Hokies face Duke at 1 and 3 p.m., then meet James Madison at 5 and 7 p.m. The games will be a homecoming of sorts for several Tech players, including left fielder April Young, from Northside; second baseman Nikki Clowers, from Cave Spring; pitcher Becky Beamer, from Glenvar; and outfielders Shelly Keffer and Donna Keffer, from Craig County.
Admission is free.
Coastal Carolina shares the lead with UNC Greensboro with 26 points after the first day of the Big South Conference men's tennis tournament at Charleston, S.C. Radford is next with 24. In the women's matches, Campbell leads Radford by a point (27-26).
Scott Reynolds, a first-team All-Timesland selection twice in his golf career, has signed a letter-of-intent with James Madison. Reynolds won the Group A state championship in 1990, when he was a sophomore at Lexington High School. He was named Timesland golfer of the year. Reynolds also made All-Timesland this year at Rockbridge County High School.
Stephanie Sparks, the Duke golfer ranked among the top 15 in the nation, fired a 4-under par 68 to help the Blue Devils take the first-round lead in the Atlantic Coast Conference women's golf tournament. Duke's 300 leads North Carolina (303), Florida State (307) and Wake Forest (311).
