HIGH COURT DENIES APPEAL IN MURDER

A Virginia death row inmate who claimed he was illegally coerced into confessing to the murder of a 10-year-old girl narrowly lost a bid to get the Supreme Court to hear his appeal Monday.

The court voted 6-3 against hearing the appeal of Everett Lee Mueller, who was convicted of the Oct. 6, 1990, murder of Charity Powers in Chesterfield County.

Justices Byron White, Harry Blackmun and David Souter voted to hear arguments in Mueller's case. Four votes are needed to grant such review.
